An unusual Chinese Imari bowl and cover decorated with chrysanthemum mons and scrolling lotus, a floral spray within a double circle inside the footrim. Diameter: 7 in. Kangxi (1662-1722).
The bowl copies a Japanese design of about 1700 in shape and decoration. It is most unusual in still having its cover intact. Such pieces, now rare, illustrate the Chinese intention to undercut the cost of Japanese production to the West at this time, while retaining a surprising fidelity to the original designs.
Condition: Small frits to both bowl and cover. The bowl has three hairline cracks visible on the exterior (see details) 2 in., 1 ¾ in. and 1 ¼ in. in length. There is a 1 ½ in. glaze crack visible at the rim on the interior only and a number of other small glaze flaws within the bowl. The cover is undamaged aside from the frits. Further photos available if required.
