A signed Japanese kakemono of a shoal of fish. Length: 22 x 61 in. Painted area: 15 7/8 x 48 ½ in. Sumi-e and colour on silk. Inscribed and dated Summer 1922. Signed: Suiun. Ivory rollers. Fitted paulownia wood box. The signature is that of the artist Komuro Suiun (1874-1945). Some specks of ink from the inscription at upper right have fallen onto other areas of the scroll. The scroll is generally in quite good condition with only slight creasing in one or two areas. The hanger at the top end came adrift a long time ago and has been replaced by a silk cord attached to the upper edge of the mount. I have the original hanger, which is in good order and will be enclosed with scroll. The caps to the ivory ends of the roller are missing. The roller itself is showing some inclination to part from the background mount but for the time being this remains intact. Collected in Japan in the 1930s. |
