Japanese display or sutra stand, a refined piece, elevated on shaped scrolls, in colors of persimmon red, light black and dark beige, using an exceptional technique of applying various colors in drips and patches, together with tiny crushed pieces of mother-of-pearl - resulting in a mosaic effect. Very well decorated Japanese moriage vase resting on three feet, together with leaf-shaped handles and decorated in translucent glaze with scroll work and large stylized blossoms. Moriage decoration was achieved with applied and enameled slipwork. Similar pieces were made in response to late 19th century interest in Japonisme. Late Meiji or Taisho period. Very small chip to slipwork at mouth.

Very handsome cylindrical box with lid, black lacquer exterior and red lacquer interior, resting on four supports ending in legs. The body with horizontal ribs, metal fittings etched with hexagons. Similar boxes are known as kai-oke and were used to store the shells for kai-awase, the "shell matching game". Late 19th/early 20th century Meiji. Some wear and tear.
