Japanese display or sutra stand, a refined piece, elevated on shaped scrolls, in colors of persimmon red, light black and dark beige, using an exceptional technique of applying various colors in drips and patches, together with tiny crushed pieces of mother-of-pearl - resulting in a mosaic effect. Very handsome cylindrical box with lid, black lacquer exterior and red lacquer interior, resting on four supports ending in legs. The body with horizontal ribs, metal fittings etched with hexagons. Similar boxes are known as kai-oke and were used to store the shells for kai-awase, the "shell matching game". Late 19th/early 20th century Meiji. Some wear and tear.
