An elegant and elaborately decorated robe, possibly used for secular dance or theatre at court, with motifs of dragon and phoenix, lotus, pine, bamboo, peach and bat, together with a multitude of other Buddhist and Daoist symbols, all executed with silk in long and short satin stitch, very fine chain stitch, with Peking knot, and couched gilt metal thread. This image of Buddha, with reddish-brown patina, generally known as the " Buddha child taking his first steps" is depicted with his left hand pointing to the sky, and his right hand pointing to earth. The statue is with incised and raised lotus design, and is mounted on a waisted round lotus base. The piece is in fine condition and is an example of what is known as Sino-Tibetan art, dominant during the 17th/18th century but this statue appears to date from the 19th century. Well carved Burmese 19th century Shan State Buddha,on lotus throne, with traces of red pigment and gold, in "touching the earth" gesture (bhumisparsa mudra) , one of two similar statues but this one has damage to the neck, ear and top of the curled head area. The piece remains attractive and with repairs performed in a professional manner, the statue would be even more attractive. Verbal provenance information available.

Burmese seated Buddha statue, Shan State, carved of alabaster with traces of painted red pigment and gold; depicting Buddha on lotus throne, shown in "touching the earth" gesture (bhumisparsa mudra) - to invoke the earth as witness to the truth of his words. Two hard to find manuscripts. (1) One Nepalese manuscript delicately painted with nine Hindu and Buddhist deities including Ganesha and Avalokitesvara, ink and pigment on paper; comprising nine sheets with paintings out of total of approx. 49 sheets, with frontis sheet. 19th century or earlier. 6" x 2 3/4". (2) Together with a Bengali manuscript, ink on palm leaves comprising approx. 40 leaves; probably 18th/19th century. 14 1/2" x 2 1/2".
