CHINESE EMBROIDERED ROBE

An elegant and elaborately decorated robe, possibly used for secular dance or theatre at court, with motifs of dragon and phoenix, lotus, pine, bamboo, peach and bat, together with a multitude of other Buddhist and Daoist symbols, all executed with silk in long and short satin stitch, very fine chain stitch, with Peking knot, and couched gilt metal thread. The robe appears to date from the 19th century, possibly pre-dating 1860 based on the fact that there is no evidence of anilin dye. The robe has been stored for the last thirty years and is in fine condition. This robe is an exceptional example of a theatre or ceremonial robe. Detailed photos and condition report upon request. Provenance information available. Compare the very similar "Theatrical Robe for a Young Woman" at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and featured in Robert D. Jacobsen's "Imperial Silks:Ch'ing Dynasty Textiles in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2 vols., 2000, page 453, Acc.no. 42.8.111.
