A Mandaling Batak Lion or Dog figure is an oracular device used by Shaman. Standing on a raised, rectangular base, with ears up and mouth open. The body decorated with a scalloped pattern and incised with a triangular circular motif on all four hips and around the base. There is an age crack in the lower right side of the base. Among the Antoni of West Timor, the traditional man's costume always included a twined and woven bag called Aluk. This bag contained his Betel Nut paraphernalia and was further personalized by the addition of items for use or protection. A desireable indigo, warp ikat, women's sarong from the Indonesian island of Savu. The large ikat design band, counterbalanced by by a plain area and numerous subsidiary bands carrying smaller ikat designs, is the typical composition of this communities textiles. The indigo color is now much less often encountered in these older garments. In our collection since 1994, this sarong probably dates to mid 20th C.
