$195.00

This short sword is worn by the peoples of Djibouti and adjacent areas of Ethiopia and Somalia. The nicely carved wood hilt is adorned with patinated brass tacks and an inverted brass cone at the pommel. The curved blade appears to have been made from a metal wagon or car spring. The natural leather scabbard and belt are very dry from age. The original scabbard seems to have been sewn up the back with a piece of fine wire, as can be seen in the photo of the throat. In very good but dry overall ...click for details

Although documented as a sword, this example of a Seme is smaller than usual. Almost as though it was created for an important youth, it is none the less is a well forged and sharp blade housed in a hide scabbard, dyed with natural pigment, in traditional red. The belt is worked to simulate reptile skin and is original to the sword. The scabbard also has a metal and bead adornment at the tip. Again suggesting that this mayy have been for a youth of importance, one can only speculate since this s ...click for details

Called Trumbash by the Mangbetu, this artistically appealing knife has been the subject of much misinformation. According to both Werner Fischer and Verlag Morsak, this well forged knife was for prestige. Worn or carried at important events, it symbolized the importance and wealth of the individual owners. Iron had to be traded for at great expense and thus represented power in all its forms. This knife with its well crafted blade and traditional wood handle, was often considered a kind of curre ...click for details

This unusual Senufo Horse with removable Rider is probably associated with the Poro initiation Ceremonies. It is known that the horse appears at Ngoro Ceremonies where it is symbolically ridden by a "Syonfolo" or Master of the Horse". The fact that a rider was carved , obviously by the same hand and that the rider is removable suggests that it may have some association with initiation instruction. The horse shows holes in the neck for the attachment of straps for the dance, yet th ...click for details

From the Niger River Delta, this very desirable old ivory Divination Tapper, was once a part of a Diviners paraphernalia used to communicate with the Otogo. The Ijo believe that they lived among these spirits before their birth. The Tapper and an associated tray, now long since gone, help the Ijo to maintain contact with the Otojo and to gain their favor. The Tapper is in very good condition, with nice patina and is presented on a small wood stand which accompanies the piece. Height 11".

Very similar in style to the mask shown on page 496 of the definitive work on East African art, Tanzania, Master Works of African Art. There is a suggestion of residual pigment in the worn scarification on the cheeks. The surface is rough textured and appears to have been darkened with a mixture of ash and oil. There is an old crack on the left facing cheek and a small rim loss, as shown. In addition, there are two hand carved, rectangular holes for attaching a head band. The interior appears to ...click for details

From a Santa Fe collection, a fine Djimini mask with traces of pigment coloring and a stylized horn bill extending from the forehead to the chin. The style of the hornbill suggests influence by the neighboring Ligby, Do Society masks rather than the usual Poro hornbill found among the Senufo masks. Our mask is well aged and shows wear from use. Please note the modest damage and cracks from use and age shown in the attached photos. An original, sacred shrine figure of the northern Baga of the Sitemu sub group. These figures were outlawed by the Marxist government of Guinea at the nations independence in 1958. Since the fall of that government a few have come out of hiding. Our figure is very well sculpted, with good symmetry and detail. The oil and medicine of feeding the spirit has congealed and darkened with age and has impregnated the wood in a way that only occurs with age. The A-Tshol is mounted on a seperate cylin ...click for details

$290.00

An interesting African sword with a figural hilt carved of hardwood. Uncertain of the attribution, we have not encountered a sword of this configuration in the past. It has been suggested that it may be Yaka. Sold by Butterfield & Butterfield in 1998. The spear point blade is clearly hand forged but not crude and has two lines of geometric decoration on each side. The hilt carving has been frequently handled and the features have become some what muted as a result. A scarce addition to any ...click for details
