From the areas of the Central and Eastern Sudan, a very fine quality Kaskara with an unusual hilt and scabbard. Probably from the Madhist Period, this sword reflects what Christopher Spring pointed out in his Book African Arms and Armor, ( SEE PG 41) when he said, " Sword blades... were traded across the Sahara from Mediterranean ports.. These blades would have been fitted with locally made hilts and scabbards.." This sword has an unusual, somewhat Takuba style scabbard and a cast bras ...click for details

This short sword is worn by the peoples of Djibouti and adjacent areas of Ethiopia and Somalia. The nicely carved wood hilt is adorned with patinated brass tacks and an inverted brass cone at the pommel. The curved blade appears to have been made from a metal wagon or car spring. The natural leather scabbard and belt are very dry from age. The original scabbard seems to have been sewn up the back with a piece of fine wire, as can be seen in the photo of the throat. In very good but dry overall ...click for details

With the Great War raging in Europe the United States remained uncertain about our involvement. In 1915 the National Security League commissioned a sculpture that recalled the highly romanticized success of the Rough Riders during the Cuba Campaign. This clean cut, assured soldier seems to be intended to put the country at ease during such troubled times. An attractive work of art with interesting historic significance. A sealed chalk sculpture. Although documented as a sword, this example of a Seme is smaller than usual. Almost as though it was created for an important youth, it is none the less is a well forged and sharp blade housed in a hide scabbard, dyed with natural pigment, in traditional red. The belt is worked to simulate reptile skin and is original to the sword. The scabbard also has a metal and bead adornment at the tip. Again suggesting that this mayy have been for a youth of importance, one can only speculate since this s ...click for details

This lighter seems to be to well finished to be catagorized as "Trench Art". The symmetry and finish suggest commercial work to be sold to patriotic citizens and soldiers. The subject also suggests that it may be post Spanish American thru WWI. The Federal shield and Eagle are of that period. A nice quality addition to any military or lighter collection. Either an intended thumb rest in the center of the eagle or a slight dent. 2.2" to top of spark wheel, 1.5" wide.
