| A very unusual mask, stylistically similar to the mask provisionally attributed to the Lombi and exhibited in the catalogue Face of the Spirits, Masks from the Zaire Basin, see pg. 210 The description references supportive material from Mestach and Felix. They reference use by diviners. Our mask has the same shape and similar face. Rather than four eyes the prominent feature is the extended tongue and two small round eyes with a some what triangular nose. There is a residual of white kaolin in the central plane of the face with the balance showing nicely aged patina. The interior shows deep patina over adze carving and irregularly shaped and worn holes around the rim. There is some rim loss as shown. At the top circumference there are small eye shaped carved holes whose purpose is open to speculation. A very interesting mask showing modest effects of use and age. Size 13.75 x 7.75. Probably mid 20th C. Accompanied by a custom metal display stand. | |||||||||||||
