| This unusual Senufo Horse with removable Rider is probably associated with the Poro initiation Ceremonies. It is known that the horse appears at Ngoro Ceremonies where it is symbolically ridden by a "Syonfolo" or Master of the Horse". The fact that a rider was carved , obviously by the same hand and that the rider is removable suggests that it may have some association with initiation instruction. The horse shows holes in the neck for the attachment of straps for the dance, yet the rider has holes in his hands for the reins. Both straps and reins are now missing. It may also be speculated that the horse and rider are a part of the property of a Senufo Sando or Diviner who would accumulate great prestige from such a piece. The horse and rider have good patina and show signs of use and wear. The horse has applied metal eyes. Losses are noted in the accompanying photos; The right front leg of the horse has, for some reason worn more than the others and is subsequently shorter.
