| Originally an 18th C pistol in the French style, with a longer barrel and probably a pierced and engraved metal side plate. The lock plate bears what is perhaps the name of a French gunsmith, but the complete name is obscured by the frizzen spring. The goose necked cock and subtle engraving on the lock plate and metal butt cap further suggest at least 18th C Continental origin. The modest original adornment suggest that this was probably one of a pair of pistols that were crafted for regular use rather than show. The pistol it was probably converted for the Trade market sometime in the 2nd Quarter of the 19th C. The barrel was shortened and the brass barrel band, escutcheon and large side plate either added by the seller or the new owner. In good condition, the lock works well and the stock is sound.
