James Hope was a noted portrait, landscape and historical genre painter who was active in Rutland County, Vermont and later in Watkins Glen, New York. His work shows the strong influences of his friend and fellow painter, Frederick Church. This painting most probably depicts a valley in West Rutland or possibly Killington area.
