| New England bird cage Windsor side chair by Samuel Gragg (1772-1855), of Boston. Early 19th century. Branded under seat - S. GRAGG BOSTON. Decorated in an old black painted surface with plank seat and original bamboo form spindles, legs and stretchers. Samuel Gragg was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 1772 and moved to Boston in 1801 where he began earning his living making "common chairs." He is known for his bamboo style Windsor chairs, but his claim to fame came with his being awarded a patent on August 31, 1808 for a bentwood "Elastic Chair."
