| Alexis Jean Fournier (American, 1865-1948), original landscape painting signed and titled on the stretcher "The Little Farm Among The Hills- Alexis Jean Fournier painter"; oil on canvas; circa 1910; 20" x 28". Signed lower left "Alexis J. Fournier" and also in lower right under frame "Alexis Jean Fournier". Painting has been professionally relined, with some in-painting in the sky in the upper corners and with stabilization of the craquelure, but retains the original stretcher that bears the artist's pencil inscription. Alexis Fournier was a painter of the Barbizon school and became a prominent figure of the Arts & Crafts movement as Elbert Hubbard's Roycroft "court painter." He also painted at the art colonies of Woodstock, NY; Provincetown, MA; and Brown County, IN. He studied in Paris at the Academie Julian with J.P. Laurens & B. Constant and also with Henri Harpignies. He has been called "the last American Barbizon painter." | ||
