| The Deer Hunter by Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951), original etching on paper, published in 1924, edition of 150, pencil signed by artist in lower left margin. Size: 7 7/8" x 10 7/8" (image). Ref: Paff #229. This image is one of Benson's more desirable, with a hunter peacefully paddling his canoe, while his prize, an antlered stag, also appears to be at rest in the bow of the craft. Condition: We have not examined this print outside its frame. It is a clear image, with light toning from the matting in the margins that does not affect the etched image. Frank Benson was an important American Impressionist painter and etcher. He was an avid sportsman, and, following an exhibition in 1912, with the "Ten American Painters," with whom he was a member, he became identified as a painter and master etcher of wildlife. His prints are catalogued in E. Paff's, "The Etchings and Drypoints of Frank Benson," NYC. This is a rare and highly collectible image that has continually increased in value during recent years. A must for any serious collector of Benson's oeuvre. | ||
