| Scottish three-piece sterling silver tea service, Edinburgh. 1824-25. Maker's mark CB. Weight: 49.8 troy ounces. A rare set of compressed globular form resting on round, stepped pedestal bases. The gadrooned bodies are accented with decorative acanthus rims and handles, and the open sugar bowl and milk jug retain an original gilt wash to their interiors. No monograms or erasures. No dents or dings. Teapot has two minor professional repairs at the handle joint and on the seam of the side of the handle, as well as one slightly visible opening of the handle seam which does not affect the functionality of this pot. Each piece bears a full matching set of hallmarks. Those on the underside of the tea pot are crisp; the marks struck on the sides of the milk jug and sugar are somewhat rubbed but still legible. We have been unable to identify the maker whose mark is CB set in a rectangle. Other marks include: thistle standard mark, Edinburgh castle town mark, 'S' date letter, and duty mark of monarch's head in profile facing right. Size of tea pot: 6 inches high x 11.25 inches across handle x 6.75 inches in diameter. Scottish hollowware is scarcely available, and a set such as this will add to any serious collection. | ||
