Mask representing the smiling face of He Shang, with small forehead, long ears, large, open and pierced through eyes, flat nose, large, open and pierced through mouth, wide chin. Wood, with remnants of thin plaster and superimposed layers of paint or lacquer. China, early 19th century. Height: 8 6/8" (22,2 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Relatively small mask representing a human face wearing an elaborate court hat. Wood, with darkish patina. China, Ming Dynasty (1388-1644). Height: 10 3/4" (27,5 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and great age, otherwise very good condition. Note: this rather rare kind of Chinese mask is not coming from minority groups. It was probably made by the same artist than mask no 1-0399, thus they could be considered as a pair and acquired as such.

Theater mask representing the face of a Kaishan, "the god who opens the mountain", with small horns, protruding forehead, relief eyebrows, bulging eyes, big nose, cheeks in relief, open mouth showing tongue and fangs, protruding chin. Wood, with traces of polychrome pigments. China, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 9 1/4" (23,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Mask representing "Kaishan", wearing a cap, with a fierce expression, his open mouth showing fangs. Wood, with polychrome pigments, fine patina. China, 19th century. Height: 10 3/8" (25,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Very good condition. Note: Kaishan, "the god who opens the mountain", has been revered for centuries by primitive mountain ethnic groups in China, seeking his protection. Large mask in the shape of a stylized lion head, protruding forehead, bulging eyes, large snout, massive upper jaw. Two large holes at top of forehead, and one large hole at each lower side of jaw, the latter to attach a handle inside the mask.
