| Pair of "edans", each with a nicely cast head on top of the shaft. Both heads have a loop on top and are joined together with a small chain. Bronze, with fine dark-green patina. Africa, Nigeria, Ogboni Secret Society, Yoruba Peoples. Height: 7" (18cm). The pair is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand that enhances their beauty. Obvious signs of use and age, otherwise excellent condition. Note 1: the Ogboni Society is a secret society which has great power in all aspects of the Yoruba Peoples' life. Members of this society wear edans as a sign of recognition. Note 2: it is also interesting to know that the head, specifically its top, is supposed to be the location of the soul in Yoruba tradition. This pair of edans is a particularly fine example of such implements. | ||||||
