Face Mask, Lwalwa Peoples
Large mask with round coiffe, small ears, concave face with oval pierced through eyes, long triangular nose in relief, small cylindrical mouth also in relief, pointed chin. Wood, with dark-brown glossy patina and traces of white pigment in the recesses. Africa, D.R. Congo/Angola, Lulua Peoples, Lwalwa tribal sub-group. Height: 15 1/4" (39 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of wear and age, old local restoration at lower left side of chin, erosion in some areas, small chips, otherwise good condition. A fine piece.
