| Statue of a protective deity or genie, ("kalong"?), standing on a rounded base, wearing a cap, with large ears, concave face with protruding eyes and nose, open mouth in relief showing teeth, long neck, arms alongside torso, hands resting on thighs, bent legs resting on small feet. Wood, with fine brown patina, semi-glossy in some areas. Traces of whitish substance all over the piece. Indonesia, Borneo Island, Dayak Peoples. Height: 11" (28 cm). The statue is mounted on a custom wood stand. Some erosion and wear, otherwise very good condition. Ex. old French collection. Note: the piece may have been part of an architectural ornament in a longhouse, the diety or genie being supposed to protect the household. | |||||||||||||
