| Female figure with typical coiffe, large oval eyes, small ears, triangular nose, open mouth showing teeth, cylindrical neck, muscular shoulders and arms, conical breasts, cylindrical abdomen with protruding navel, bent legs resting on small feet. A tenon at the lower back side was used to attach the figure to the reliquary box. Wood, with dark-brown semi-glossy patina, covered in some areas with black pigment or remnants of sacrificial material. Africa, South-Cameroon/North Gabon,Fang Peoples. Height: 16 1/2" (42 cm). Chips at feet, left breast and lower back, erosion, small age cracks, otherwise good condition. Ex. old French collection. Note 1: a similar statue belongs to the Barbier Mueller Museum collection in Geneva. Note 2: the piece is typical of the style of the Fang reliquary figures that were sculpted by the Fang tribes of the Southern Cameroon and equatorial Guinea region.
