| Statue of a standing male, head carved in detail, long and large neck, narrow shoulders, arms alongside torso, relief breasts, protruding abdomen, obvious genitalia, protruding buttocks, long bent legs, large stylized feet. Hard and heavy wood, brown patina with some encrustation. Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi Peoples. Height: 29 1/2" (75 cm). Erosion all over and age cracks, otherwise very good condition. Note: such figures were placed at the entrance of the hut of a diviner, or soothsayer. Those figures are rather rare. The piece that we offer here is also very different in quality from usual Lobi figures, as its face and features are more finely carved than the highly stylized figures that are normally offered in Lobi art. This is certainly due to the importance of its former owner in the community where he was living. | |||||||||||||||
