Important Lion Dance Mask, China, 18th C.
Large mask in the shape of a stylized lion head, protruding forehead, bulging eyes, large snout, massive upper jaw. Two large holes at top of forehead, and one large hole at each lower side of jaw, the latter to attach a handle inside the mask. Small holes around the upper side of the rim, probably for attachment of a costume, or hair to represent fur. Wood, with numerous layers of polychrome pigments, ancient patina. China, 18th century, probably earlier. Dimensions: height: around 14" (35 cm), width: around 12" (30 cm), depth: around 8" (20 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Several old restorations, otherwise good condition despite great age.
