Festival Mask 2, China, Early 19th C.
Face mask carved in the shape of a smiling face wearing an official cap. Wood, with numerous superimposed layers of polychrome pigments. Chinese character on top of cap ("happiness"). A series of tiny holes under the cheeks and on the chin suggest the former existence of a moustache and a beard, probably some animal hair. China, early 19th century, maybe older. Height: 9 15/16" (22,8 cm). Obvious signs of use and great age, small crack on left side of cap, otherwise very good condition. Note: such mask was used during village festivals to incite local gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...).
