| Mask representing the face of God Kaishan, with two horns, a fierce expression, bulging eyes and an open mouth showing fangs. Wood, with polychrome lacquering. China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Height: 10 1/2" (26 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Some chips (horns and hair), otherwise very good condition. Note: God Kaishan belongs to one of the most ancient Chinese mythologies. He was revered by some ethnic groups, living in mountainous regions, seeking protection against evil. This mask, together with others representing other characters of the "Nuo" theater, was used by dancers and actors during exorcising rituals at village festivals. | |||||||||||||
