| Face mask elaborately carved in the shape of a suffering face wearing an official cap. Wood, with dark-red lacquering. Strands of hemp (several are missing) were affixed with wood pegs into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Height: 8 1/2" (21,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and age, otherwise very good condition. Note: this mask most probably represents Tudigon, the God of Cereals and of Crops. Such mask was used, together with others representing other characters of the traditional "Nuo" theater, during village festivals to incite local gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...). | ||||||||||||
