| Face mask representing the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the Soil and of Cereals. Wood, with superimposed layers of polychrome pigments. Strands of animal hair (several are missing) were affixed into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Height: 9 1/2" (24 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and great age, old restoration alongside the right side and inside, otherwise good condition. NOTE: Tudigong belongs to ancient Chinese mythology. His mask, together with others, was used by dancers during village festivals to incite him and other local gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...). | |||||||||||||
