| Superbly carved face mask, with protruding forehead, beautifully enhanced large eyes, fine nose and full lips, ending in a small receding chin. A series of holes of different shapes (circular, square and rectangular) are pierced under the chin (probably to affix a beard) and along the rim. Old (and local) restoration on the left side, with a highly oxidized staple at forehead level. Africa, Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, early 20th century, maybe earlier. Height: 9 1/2" (24 cm). The mask is unmounted. Obvious signs of extended use and old age, very nice dark-brown patina. Note: this mask belonged to an old French collection. | ||||||||
