| Mask representing "Kaishan", wearing a cap, with a fierce expression, his open mouth showing fangs. Wood, with polychrome pigments, fine patina. China, 19th century. Height: 10 3/8" (25,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Very good condition. Note: Kaishan, "the god who opens the mountain", has been revered for centuries by primitive mountain ethnic groups in China, seeking his protection. His mask was used by actors/dancers during "Nuo" theater shows in village festivals. | ||||||||||||
