Relief of a Makara, Nepal, 17th C.
Architectural ornament in the shape of a relief representing a "makara" standing on its rear legs, with wide eyes, open mouth showing teeth, its nose ending in a trunk. Tenon on top. Wood, with dark-brown patina. Nepal, early 17th century, maybe earlier. Height: 13" (33 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Very good condition despite old insect infestation (treated, no danger) and obvious signs of great age. Note: a "makara" is a sea monster, or water dragon, originally associated with the Hindu god Varuna, the lord of the cosmic order. It is often depicted around deities on reliefs and sculptures.
