Unusual Statue of a Protective Deity, China, 18th C.
Statue of a deified tamed demon, standing in an aggressive and threatening posture on a rounded rectangular base, bare chested, wearing a large cape and pants, holding an axe in his right hand. Wood, with several superimposed layers of lacquering and gilding. Remnants of hair tufts around the top of the forehead. China, Qing Dynasty, mid 18th century. Height: 14" (35,5 cm). Lacquering and gilding flaked in several areas, otherwise very good condition. A rather unusual piece. NOTE: tamed demonic spirits are protecting entities acting under the command of Heaven generals (deified heroes from ancient and often mythological periods of Chinese history) who are in charge of protecting temples and human beings against evil threats.
