| Statue of a lohan (or "arhat" in sanscript), one of the 16 or 18 disciples of Buddha, in monk's robes, sitting cross-legged, hands joined, his face reflecting a profound inner serenity. Lacquered and partly gilt wood. The statue was carved in two wood parts, one to represent the head, torso and back, the other to represent the legs and hands. China, Qing Dynasty, 18th century. Height: 17" (43 cm). Lacquer and gold flaking in several areas, without damaging the beauty of the statue, otherwise very good condition. | |||||||||||||
