| ANN TRUXELL. Untitled oil on canvas, 20" x 36", signed "Truxell" lower right. Fine condition. No date (1960s). Simple wood lattice frame. A fine picture by an important American Surrealist painter. "The world of dream-fraught symbolism is explored by this gifted artist whose universe centers on evocative and bizarre matings of moons, stars, animals, unknown creatures, landscapes and sky-scapes. Done in Persian miniature detail, the paintings are a merging of what appear to be inner states - glimpses of Blakeian nightmare visions. Color is dense and subdued, placing a curious pressure on themes redolent with the phantasmagoric. But for all their haunted and haunting eeriness, Truxell's small canvases contain both discipline and thought. While creating monsters, the artist has her eye firmly fixed on such matters as strong compositional values, and a fertile use of shape, color and line. Too, her work elicits a mysterious stillness, as though she were 'hearing' what she was also sensing and seeing" (John Gruen in "The Soho Weekly News," Jan. 1974). | |||||||
