| CARL BROWN. Table decorated in oil paint by the artist, 24" high, 24" wide, 21 1/2" deep, the top painted in blue, shades of red and shades of green, the eight lines radiating from the 2"-diameter central medallion forming compartments decorated either with parallel lines with quantities of hatched diagonals connecting them, or curling forms expanding in size as they reach the corners of the table, the 2" border on all four sides containing both straight and undulating lines, a small ornament in each corner. The apron and gently tapering legs (which are attached to the top as one piece, with screws) of this stylish occasional table are brown-stained, perhaps as manufactured, perhaps by Carl Brown. Numerous small pieces of paint are missing from the top, painted surface (most from along the check lines that are visible upon close examination, this checking to the paint parallel to the wood grain); the table top shows as well the incidental wear and tear associated with daily use. No date (probably, early to mid-1950s). Provenance: estate of Constance Clark Willis. Brown was a frequent guest at Willis' Amagansett, Long Island home, and painted other furniture as well as architectural elements for Willis and her husband. | ||||||
