Artist-Designed Country Pottery Plate, Circa 1945
CERAMIC DISH, 9" in diameter, 1" high, the depressed center bearing a handpainted rooster, this outlined by a six-pointed star around the rim, sprays of leaves between the points, the decoration in green and brown, the unglazed underside bearing an incised number / letter sequence ("CX62 / 3 / S1"). A 4mm. x 2mm. shallow chip along the rim. The base is pierced with two small holes (as manufactured, we assume); a wire run through the channel connecting them allows one to display the dish on a wall. Possibly, of French origin, and of comparable quality to artist-designed continental ceramics of the Post-War era.
