California Terracotta Sculpture of the 1950s
ROBERT THOMAS. "Seated Lady." Terracotta sculpture, 9 1/2" high, 4 1/4" wide (maximum), 3 3/4" deep (maximum), 4" diameter base (as an integral part of the statue), initialed ("R.T.") and dated ("59") on the circumference of the base, titled on the exhibition label on the underside. Fine condition. Provenance: Esther Bear Gallery, Santa Barbara, California, Thomas' long-time representative. Robert Thomas (1924-1987), professor of art at the University of California Santa Barbara. See "Robert Thomas Sculpture 1952-1965: A Retrospective Exhibition" (Santa Barbara, CA: University of California, 1966). Thomas studied with Ossip Zadkine in Paris, 1948-1949; this vigorously modeled study of the human form shows that master's lingering influence.
