| A cast iron paper and book press on a fitted pine case, the press 11 1/2 high, 17" long, 10" wide, the stand 32" high, 21" long, 20" deep, the press of screw type, weighing approximately 90 pounds, with the impressed mark "Muir's Warranted" and apparently of late 19th century or early 20th century manufacture, in good working order. The pine stand, which was either made for or (more likely) adapted for the press, consists of an upper, galleried shelf into a depression in which the press is securely fitted, a wide frieze, and square lower shelf, baluster ring-turned legs in sections, ring-turned feet, weighing approximately 20 pounds, unmarked and probably dating from the middle of the twentieth century. One of the gallery sides has a seven-inch hairline crack, the opposite gallery side has a four-inch hairline crack, the lower shelf a narrow eight-inch split; three of the feet are missing substantial portions along their ring-turned circumferences. The press, though securely held by the wood housing, can be lifted clear of it for purposes of cleaning, moving, etc. NOTE: this item must be picked up in person at our East Hampton, New York premises; it cannot be shipped. | |||||||||
