| A fine carved picture frame, gray bole, red bole, gold leaf and wood, 9 1/2" x 7 3/8" (sight), 4" frame width (outer dimensions of frame, 17 5/8" x 15 1/2"), the raised sight edge with an incised design, the deep, narrow hollow bounded by a wide outer rail with deeply carved, centered cartouches and cartouche corners, this outer rail stepped down to a beaded outset edge at the back (or rear) of the frame. Gold leaf is missing from several of the raised areas, the largest being approx. 1 1/2" x (max.) approx. 3/4", others being 3/8" square, 5/8" x 1/8", 1/2" x 1/8", 7/8" x 1/16", there being approximately 35 such places (including those with the smallest losses); a piece of wood (approx. 3/16" x approx. 1/8") is missing from one corner (see photograph), and a piece of wood (approx. 1/2" x approx. 1/16") is missing from a corner of the sight edge (see photograph); a piece of wood (approx. 1/2" x approx. 1/4") is missing from the outermost (back) edge of the frame. The back of the frame bears a 3/4" x 1 3/4" portion of a paper label, "Handcarved Frames" imprinted on it adjacent to an illustration of a hand holding a carving tool (see photograph). No date (probably, first third of the twentieth century). An outstanding American carved frame in original condition; the gray background (left standing in the deeply-carved furrows) and the gold overpainting interact in a most pleasing manner. | |||||||||
