Sheridan Crumlish Oil Painting, 1959
SHERIDAN CRUMLISH. "The View." Oil on board (masonite panel), 32" x 26 3/8", signed lower right, dated 1959 lower right, titled and inscribed ("#5") on the 3/4"-thick plywood backing (original to the picture) attached to the panel around its rear perimeter. Rendered in yellow, gray, violet, red, pink, black, shades of brown, shades of blue. A 2 1/2" x 1/16" scratch within the composition, upper right; a narrow (less than 1mm.-wide), five-inch long scratch in the lower left corner; a handful of other short, minor scratches; slight soiling. Attractive, narrow, brown, black-highlighted, wood frame. Provenance: estate of Constance Clark Willis, at whose Amagansett, New York home Crumlish frequently stayed in the 1950s. We feel that this picture was in all likelihood painted on the eastern end of Long Island, the scenery there either depicted in it, or (depending upon one's reading of its abstracted elements) serving as its inspiration. Sheridan Crumlish, born circa 1923.
