SOLD 

A William and Mary kneehole desk with a burl walnut, herringbone and cross-banded veneer top and a total of 8 drawers, with one drawer above a small document drawer and six graduated drawers on each side. Old brasses probably of a later selection, and a central interior cabinet opening outwards. Includes original locks and one key. Straight bracket feet. 29 1/2" X 31" X 16 1/2".

An unusual American stoneware slip decorated tobacco box or container showing the theme of "The fox guarding the Chicken Coop". We wonder if this is Southern, possibly Western Virginia. There are a few minor chips off the glaze. Probably 19th century. 9" X 12 1/2" X 7 1/2"

An charming example of 19th century English Arts and Crafts, decorated all over with polychrome lacquer decorations in the Japanese taste. The drawers are fit with little handles and drawers fronts veneered with unusual random designs and patterns. There are a few drawers pulls missing, and no key for the cabinet. The English had a revival of Oriental tastes in the 1890s. 18" X 15" X 7".

An oil on masonite, 4 1/2" X 3 1/2" by George Fredericks within a frame. Fredericks was a Circus stunt performer and self-taught artist, born in 1909 in Bermondsey, London. His popular circus related themes are are in the realm of dreams, magic and a sort of cosmic imagination. Exhibited at the Artists International Association in 1958 with Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Chagall, and Picasso and then later in 1965, 1967 and 1972. A earlier needlework sampler exercising the alphabet, the Lord's prayer and a poetic sentiment about momento mori. Signed "Ellennor Whitehouse" and dated 1787. Site of the sampler is 12 1/4X 8 1/4". Been re-framed in an antique-like ebonized and gilt frame and conserved. Damage to the sampler is repaired sympathetically , middle right side, upper left corner and lower middle and right side.

A fine inlay mahogany Georgian knife box offering an original interior with slotted receptacles for knives, spoons, and other sterling dining utensils. Most knife boxes have altered or missing interiors, but not this one. The upward opening lid opens reveals inlay on the inside lid in addition to the exterior casement. Late 18th or early 19th century, and of superior craftsmanship. The lock, now damaged, has the keyhole covered with an engraved silver shield.

This splendid Baktiari woven rug has reds and blues galore, and with its white border the eye is drawn inward to the busier designs. Its been enjoyed in our home for years, but now is for sale. The tribal weaving of the Baktiari tribes includes, among other things, superb rugs woven on wool foundations. Workshop rugs can be distinguished from the tribal pieces by the fact that they were woven on cotton foundations.
