The four shell form salts are matching, all with a "J. H." maker's hallmark and with the 1898 hallmark date for Birmingham, but the five shell form spoons, one more than the set requires, consist of three with twisted shafts which we think go with the set, while the other two do not match the set, and are therefore associated. An especially attractive sterling dish, probably intended for butter, with a knife/spreader, all in the original handsome leather bound and silk lined presentation box. Since the pattern of the knife handle does not match the dish perfectly, and so this may be a substitute for the original. The box, which is in excellent condition, identifies "Kirk & Co. Art Jewelers" as the purveyor, although the maker's hallmark is not clear. RL*
