A fine inlay mahogany Georgian knife box offering an original interior with slotted receptacles for knives, spoons, and other sterling dining utensils. Most knife boxes have altered or missing interiors, but not this one. The upward opening lid opens reveals inlay on the inside lid in addition to the exterior casement. Late 18th or early 19th century, and of superior craftsmanship. The lock, now damaged, has the keyhole covered with an engraved silver shield.
