| An oil on board attributed to Philadelphia born artist Elisha Kent Kane Wetherill (1874-1929) of sailboats by the shore. Wetherill led the impressionist movement in the United States, studying under Thomas Anschutz (1851-1912)and, in Paris, under James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and Jean Paul Laurens (1838-1921). He attended the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Much of Wetherill's painting and etching work included portraits, landscapes, and seascapes, and he painted much of New York City where he had a studio and lived at East 23rd street near 5th Ave. He held memberships with the National Academy of Design, Associate 1927; Salmagundi Club, NYC; Allied Artists of America , NYC; Brooklyn Society of Etchers, NY; and Philadelphia Sketch Club. He received awards at the San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition and the Sesqui-Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the National Academy of Design in 1925. His work can be viewed in the collections of the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA; the Philadelphia Art Club; the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY; and the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. The board measures 13" X 16 1/8", and is slightly bowed. There is a small bit of paper stuck to the center of the surface. | |||||||
