C1740 Engraved Irish Georgian Plain Stem Wine Glass
A plain stem wine glass dating to C1740. The tall round funnel bowl engraved with a scrolling motif between dashed borders; below this the initials ‘BS’ within further dashes. A thick plain stem and a conical foot with rough pontil. Lead glass. Height: 6 7/16” Rim: 2 3/8” Foot: 2 7/8”. Good condition other than some minor nibbles to the bearing surface of the foot. These do not impact on display. Stocky plain stem glasses with thick stems are thought to be Irish and this is the likely origin of this glass. Engraving on an English or Irish plain stem glass of this date is unusual.
