| Rare and early Pewabic squat vase covered in matte green glaze. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Stamped Pewabic/Detroit and measuring 5" x 6 1/2". The pot is hand thrown and shows ridges encircling the vase from the base ring up to the widest portion. As a guide to Pewabic's green glaze the book "The Ceramics of William H. Grueby" by Susan J. Montgomery states that in the early parts of the 20th century as Grueby pottery was winning praise and awards for their wares, "Other potteries were inspired by Grueby's success to produce a matte green glaze. Van Briggle, Rookwood, Pewabic and Merrimac, highly respected potteries in their own rights, all produced a version of low luster green". This great piece is Pewabic's take on the great matte green glaze as produced by these great American potteries and is most similar to Teco in shade and texture. | |
