workmanship. Date: 18th century. Size: 20cm by 12.5cm. Condition: losses,
wears, chips, age lines consistent with age. The top border has been shorted

A beautiful Chinese lacquer lac burgaute bowl, with mother-of-pearl, gold
and silver inlays. This bowl is of the best quality I've seen in this kind, as the inlays are painting-like. There are charming age lines all over the lacquer surface (see the fifth picture) and they gave a nice age feel. So on the basis of these traits I would date this bowl to be mid-Qing Chinese instead of late 19th century Chinese-style Japanese. Size: 11.5cm diameter. This is an interesting set of Japanese ? Chinese? lacquer wares, fully decorated outer boxes containing inner small boxes. The decorating techniques seem to me Japanese, and yet the decorative motifs are quite Chinese (such as the gourd, etc). Japanese export for Chinese market? Or Chinese work incorporating Japanese techniques? Anyway, the in-laid works are merticulously done and of very high quality.
