Coastal Watercolor Painting by Robert D Wilkie
Beautiful watercolor painting by Robert D. Wilkie, American 1828-1903. Approximately 14 1/2" x 19" WITH the frame and matting. WITHOUT the frame & matting it measures 8 1/2" x 13". Signed lower right Robt D. Wilkie. He was best known for his landscapes, genre, still life & bird paintings. b.1828, Halifax Nova Scotia, died 1903, Swampscott MA. Halifax active 1849; Boston & Roxbury, 1856-1902. Exhibited: Vose Galleries, Boston 1948 (120 of his paintings; rediscovery). Comments: By 1953 he had begun to contribute landscape views to Gleason’s Pictorial Drawing Room Companion. In 1863-65 he was Boston artist-correspondent for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Weekly; In 1868 and later he was doing work for the Boston lithographer, Louis Prang. During the seventies he made a number of painting trips to the White and Adirondack Mountains and taught painting in Boston. Probably between 1896-99 he painted over 100 watercolor scenes from Dickens’ novels. His health failing, he moved to Swampscott MA and died there at the home of his son. The Vose Galleries published at the same time two catalogues, one of 98 Dickens scenes and the other of 22 misc. oils and watercolors. He is listed in Who was Who in American Art. Very good condition.
