| Gorgeous Doulton Burslem Hyperian ware vase signed Kelsall. Approximately 5 3/4" high and about 4 1/2" in diameter at the widest point. The opening at the top measures 1 5/8" in diameter. Marked on the bottom Doulton Burslem England which dates this beauty from 1891-1902.There is a K on the bottom which is probably the gilder's mark. It is signed Kelsall right on the front bottom to the right of the pate sur pate flower. There is beautiful gilt work around the shoulder and the inside of the neck. Hyperian was the name given early this century to a style of painting, particularly floral, done entirely by hand on bone china in a very delicate manner - no use, it seems, being made of outline prints from engraved copper plates. This decoration was introduced by C.J. Noke about 1900 and was a very popular style on the English and American markets. It's use continued for several years and was sometimes combined with pate sur pate. John Keats was one of Noke's favorite poets. The name Hyperian was suggested by Keats Dream of Hyperian and indeed some of the ware in this style has something of a subdued, dreamlike quality. Mostly associated with Noke in this kind of decoration were Edward Raby, Walter Slater, J. Kelsall and Fred Walklate. Very good condition. Some misses in the glaze at the bottom as shown. This was done in the making. | |||||||||||
