Rookwood Vellum on Porcelain Vase by Fred Rothenbush
Beautiful scenic Rookwod Pottery vellum on porcelain vase. c.1923. Approximately 9 1/2" tall. This lovely vase shows a beautiful wooded scene with a house snuggled amongst the trees. When you turn the vase you can see the back side of the house. Marks include Fred Rothenbush's monogram, the mark for Rookwood Pottery with 14 flames and the Roman numerals XXIII c.1923), V(for vellum), the letter P on it's side (porcelain) and the number 2032D. According to Anita Ellis in Rookwood Pottery The Glaze Lines, From Easter of 1915 to about 1925, the letter P, for porcelain, was impressed on objects to note Rookwood's new Soft (i,e,, low fired) Porcelain body. The P is usually seen on it's side in relation to other marks. Rookwood's Porcelain body is somewhat translucent and will glow a reddish pink when shining a light through it. This same body was later marketed as Jewel Porcelain. By about a925 the Soft Porcelain body was used almost exclusively at Rookwood and the P designation was dropped. Very good condition.
